Le French May

ART & CULTURE

From Monet to Mozart, Borget to Beauty and the Beast, there’s something for Francophiles all over Hong Kong throughout May until July. Le French May Arts Festival has grown and evolved to reach the widest audience possible in Hong Kong with exhibitions and performances, film screenings and public events.

This year the theme is “Celebrating Art and Life the French Way” and covers  classical music, ballet, jazz and hop-hop.

Programmes include the festival’s opening concert – The Birth of the Sun King, a rediscovering of a lost masterpiece written for the King Louis XIV with a crossover with new media; the debut performance of Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France in Hong Kong; a Paris Ballet Legend performance by three star dancers of Paris National Opera; three French Jazz nights in tribute to legendary jazz voices, as well as a new kind and classy hip-hop by female dancers.

Two highlights of the festival are:
ART - Claude Monet: The Spirit of Place
An exhibition of 17 original artworks by Claude Monet at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, May 4-July 11

MUSIC - Mozart in Love
Sabine Devieilhe, a young soprano getting rave reviews from international critics, will be singing a selection of Mozart pieces accompanied by Ensemble Pygmalion and its founder and conductor Raphael Pichon at Hong Kong City Hall, Concert Hall, May 5, 8pm

Established in 1993, Le French May is one of the largest cultural events in Asia under the patronage of Consulate of France in Hong Kong and Macau. With more than 120 programmes presented across two months, it has become an iconic part of Hong Kong’s cultural scene attracting approximately two million visitors each year.
