Founded in 1976, the Hong Kong International Film Festival is Asia’s oldest international film festival and a pioneer in introducing Hong Kong Chinese language and Asian cinema and filmmakers to the world. Screening over 250 titles from more than 55 countries in over 11 major cultural venues across the territory every year, HKIFF is one of the largest cultural events in Hong Kong and it starts this week! (April 11-25)

This year’s Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) will mark the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover from Britain to China with a special focus on major Hong Kong movies of the past 20 years.
One of the highlights will be a retrospective of the work by Edward Yang. One of the most influential filmmakers in Asian cinema, Yang was a pioneering figure in the New Taiwanese Cinema movement of the 1980s, alongside directors such as Hou Hsiao-hsien and Tsai Ming-liang. He won best director at Cannes in 2000 for A One And A Two (Yi Yi) The festival sees newly restored versions of Taipei Story (1985) and A Brighter Summer Day. |
Anyway, the 41st Hong Kong International Film Festival brings to the city a 16-day cinematic celebration featuring hundreds of films old and new. Beyond the obvious choices of what to see – from gala screenings to retrospectives of newly restored masterpieces – choosing what to watch can be something of a gamble, but Nocturnal Animals is a safe bet from the hands of Tom Ford and with a stellar performance from Amy Adams. |
