This year’s Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) will mark the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover from Britain to China with a special focus on major Hong Kong movies of the past 20 years.

One of the highlights will be a retrospective of the work by Edward Yang. One of the most influential filmmakers in Asian cinema, Yang was a pioneering figure in the New Taiwanese Cinema movement of the 1980s, alongside directors such as Hou Hsiao-hsien and Tsai Ming-liang. He won best director at Cannes in 2000 for A One And A Two (Yi Yi) The festival sees newly restored versions of Taipei Story (1985) and A Brighter Summer Day.

Anyway, the 41st Hong Kong International Film Festival brings to the city a 16-day cinematic celebration featuring hundreds of films old and new. Beyond the obvious choices of what to see – from gala screenings to retrospectives of newly restored masterpieces – choosing what to watch can be something of a gamble, but Nocturnal Animals is a safe bet from the hands of Tom Ford and with a stellar performance from Amy Adams.
