Spotlight on Hotel ICON in the Institute of Hospitality Annual Research Report 2018

INNOVATIONS

A report featuring Hotel ICON and its uniqueness were published on Institute of Hospitality's annual research report 2018 by Richard Hatter, Chair of the Institute of Hospitality Hong Kong Branch, and General Manager of Hotel ICON.

With its pioneering education model, Hotel ICON in Hong Kong is a unique teaching and research hotel through its partnership with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, offering a progressive learning platform that fosters entrepreneurial spirit, creativity and innovation.

Throughout the hotel you will encounter smiling and happy young people who you will recognise by their smart brown uniforms. These staff members are studying in the School of Hotel and Tourism Management. By giving them exposure to all areas of the hotel we are training them to be future hospitality leaders. This is our special mission and we are proud that their careers are launched with us.

Over the past year, Hotel ICON and the Institute of Hospitality have jointly organised thought leadership events including the Concierge and Lifestyle Management Forum, the Future Trends of Housekeeping Operation Forum and the Revenue Strategy Forum.

We experiment and use Hotel ICON as a laboratory. For example, in revenue management, Hotel ICON is partnering with Duetto to experiment with the latest contextualised open pricing where rates are continually responding to shifts and patterns in potential demand from different markets and channels in real time.At the end of 2017 we hosted the inaugural Diversity and Inclusion Conference for the hospitality industry in Hong Kong. It is just one of many activities that ICON is initiating to support equitable and inclusive practices this year.

On the ‘trending wave’ of artificial intelligence and automation as highlighted during the August Housekeeping Operation Forum, Hotel ICON has also been experimenting with a new autonomous delivery robot by Konica Minolta who is stationed at the ninth floor bar, and an Intellibot vacuum robot by Diversey, who has recently joined the Housekeeping team.

On the sustainability front, we recently adopted Organic Refuse Conversion Alternative (ORCA) technology, which turns food waste into water. The water created using this unique process will be used to irrigate part of the hotel’s vertical garden in our lobby.

Whether harnessing technology to empower its staff, advancing sustainability in unique ways or launching conferences, the hotel is embracing its role as a globally renowned thought leader in its field.

In 2017, Hotel ICON maintained its high ranking as one the top five hotels in Hong Kong on TripAdvisor and Hong Kong has remained one of the world's most visited cities by international travellers with close to 26 million arrivals expected in 2018, according to market research firm Euromonitor International.

Given that safety is a predominant concern while making travel decisions, many international travelers are choosing Asia instead of Europe or North America.

According to Hong Kong Tourism Board, in the third quarter of 2017, Hong Kong registered an increase of 268,000 arrivals, a 1.8% rise over the same period in 2016 and a positive signal for the recovery of the tourism sector.
