The Flying Winemaker
Eddie McDougall, or The Flying Winemaker as he is become known, is the charming face behind one of Hong Kong’s best wine bars and on April 19th he is coming to Hotel ICON for a very special gourmet day of food and wine. The Flying Winemaker is on a mission to change the way people perceive and consume wine across Asia. The Hong Kong-based master winemaker is passionate about exploring the best wine being produced across Asia, the industry’s fastest growing market. He searches for undiscovered varieties in his mission to make them accessible to the world.

“Wine from Asia is not a gimmick anymore. I think ‘eat local, drink local’ sits well with a lot of people” says Eddie McDougall and the sommelier at Above & Beyond, Ace Lee agrees.
Every year, the Flying Winemaker publishes a guide to the best Asian wines, and this year’s edition features 19 wineries from India, Myanmar, Thailand and Indonesia. Among them is the Hatten Wines Tunjung, a non-vintage sparkling wine from Bali, made with local belgia and probolinggo biru grapes, which the guide’s judges ranked as the best sparkling wine in Asia. |
Curious wine lovers will be able to try that wine this week at Hotel ICON’s Asian Wine Festival, which takes place on April 19 as well as exploring the region’s best offerings under the guidance of the winemakers themselves, featuring award-winning wineries such as Chateau Mercian from Japan, Silver Heights from China, and the Pernod Ricard owned Helan Mountain. Visitors can pair the tastings with signature tapas prepared by Hotel ICON Executive Chef and take home some wine tips from the Senior Sommelier of the hotel for the full gourmet experience. |

For an entry fee of HK$240, guests at the event on April 19 can taste sparkling wine from Bali, koshu from Japan, and a Bordeaux-style red from Ningxia, as well as other wines from around the region.
