HOT DOWN - Summer in the City

ICON-GUIDE

Hong Kong Summers are notorious for the unbearable heat but there are so many ways to keep cool this season. From chilling in restaurants sipping on cold drinks, to shopping in air-conditioned world-class malls, to even heading outdoors and watching Boat Races, there's do much to do here in this city! Wondering where to go in Hong Kong? Read on!

Hong Kong Summers has officially arrived! There's no denying that summer in the Fragrant Harbour can be hot and sticky, but thankfully help is at hand with a brilliant range of options to beat the heat and allow you to see the city at its best. If you're wondering where to go in Hong Kong, or if you're curious about the things you can do Asia's World City, look no further! Check out the ultimate guide to where to go in Hong Kong for the summer.

“Most obviously, as Hong Kong is composed of 263 islands, we’re surrounded by water!

as soon as you jump into the ocean..

A boat trip out on the iconic harbour brings natural air conditioning, be it in a converted junk, modern cruiser or even the venerable Star Ferry, plowing the waters since 1888. There’s no better way to see the city’s skylines with the waves and appreciate the thousands of skyscapers which make for such unique vistas.

Check out the Hong Kong summer festival- Dragon Boat!

The annual pilgrimage of Hong Kong is the Dragon Boat Festival, taking place every year in late June. Head over to Stanley and the Southside to appreciate this boisterous festival, taking in the sights and smells of freshly cooked rice dumplings and iced drinks. Here, you’ll see the amazing boat races that originated hundreds of years ago in China, with teams screaming and shouting as they prepare to cross the finishing line. Afterwards, enjoy a leisurely walk along the beaches and hidden trails in and around the Stanley Area and if you’ve got more time, head over to Stanley Village and Stanley Market. You’ll find all kinds of knick-knacks at this open-air flea market, as well as a ton of restaurants and seaside bars that will give you a way to beat the Hong Kong summer heat. Choose from restaurants like Beef and Liberty, Liu’s BBQ and Pizza Express.

Bus 6, 6A, 6X, 66 or 260 from Exchange Square bus terminus in Central takes you to Stanley Main Beach

Cooling down for the Hong Kong summer- head to a beach.

Beaches abound too, from the easy-going vibes and barbecue pit of South and Repulse Bay, the watersports of Cheung Chau island or the often-deserted beauty of Tai Long Wan, known as Big Wave Bay. Pristine sands, crisp waves and fresh currents, it's hard to believe you're in Hong Kong. The best beach, is of course, in Cheung Chau Island, where you can access the beach freely and set up your own games and volleyball courts. With some snack stalls and a couple of watersports equipment rental stores, you’re bound to have fun in this rural rustic respite away from the bustling city and urban life.

Where to go in Hong Kong for amazing shopping

If you’re not a water baby, then Hong Kong’s famous malls provide welcome respite through air-conditioned shopping comfort, meaning you needn’t break a sweat, other than looking at your credit card bill! Of course, another way to keep cool comes in the form of ice cold food and drinks, with no shortage of spots to get your gelati on or kick back with a beer or cool glass of Rosé. With a table al fresco, and maybe the help of a strategically-placed fan, there’s arguably no better way to survive summer in the city! The best mall in town is Harbour City, where you can do all of this, keeping cool and enjoying the view of Hong Kong, whilst still browsing some of your favourite fashion labels.
