XCool: Achieving Cooling Without Electricity

 

Developed by a team led by award-winning PolyU researchers, XCool is a sustainable, electricity-free cooling paint designed to combat the "urban heat island" effect. Unlike traditional materials that absorb solar heat, XCool features:
  • High Solar Reflectivity: Reflects over 95% of solar radiation.
  • Mid-Infrared Emission: Actively emits heat back into the cold universe through the "atmospheric window".
  • Sub-Ambient Cooling: Can reduce surface temperatures by up to 6°C to 10°C below the ambient air temperature without using a single watt of power.
 

Empowering Hotel ICON’s Eco-Branding

By applying XCool to our critical infrastructure like cooling towers, Hotel ICON is leveraging PolyU’s tech-transfer ecosystem to enhance our eco-friendly assessment and branding. This innovation empowers our sustainability mission by:
  • Reducing Thermal Load: Lowering the heat absorbed by our building, which significantly reduces the energy required for air conditioning.
  • Improving Chiller Efficiency: Lowering the temperature of cooling water entering our chiller plant, allowing our systems to operate at peak thermodynamic performance.
  • Showcasing Global Leadership: Utilizing technology that has earned prestigious accolades, including the Gold Prize at the Geneva Inventions and the HKIE Grand Award.
