Zaha Hadid Design and Royal Thai
at ICON Lobby

ART & CULTURE
Unveiling the innovative MOON SYSTEM sofa and hand-tufted ribbon carpet by Royal Thai.

July 2019

Often touted as having the most Instagrammable hotel lobby, Hotel ICON’s lobby is defined by a newly unveiled sculptural landscape though the curation of furniture pieces designed by ZAHA HADID DESIGN.  They include the MOON SYSTEM designed by ZHD for B&B Italia, and the hand-tufted RIBBON carpet designed by ZHD for Royal Thai.

According to Richard Hatter, General Manager of the upscale and innovative Hotel ICON, “Dame Zaha Hadid left a lasting impact on the design world challenging convention and uniformity with her design philosophy. Similarly, at Hotel ICON, we offer an experience unlike any other, and our brand seeks to fuse innovative style with local flavours aimed at the stylish, cultured guests with a taste for expressive art and design.”

Even as the cityscape evolves, seemingly in a blink, one thing remains a constant: world-class hotels. While big brands have historically reigned, several notable boutique addresses have carved out a piece of the pie in recent years. At these top Hong Kong hotels, you’ll find immaculate spas and flamboyant accents, head-turning art collections and enough things to see, eat, and do on site that you may never leave until forced to check out.

Fluidity between Art, Design and Education

The “hotel laboratory” of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management, at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University echoes the Hotel ICON & ZAHA HADID DESIGN collaboration in that it is part of a continuous process of ongoing research, education, and experimentation.

Co-Director of ZHD, Woody Yao explains, “In the disciplines of Architecture and Design much can be discovered through the sharing of ideas.  Zaha taught prolifically, and many of her students worked directly for her after completing their education.  She understood the importance of new discoveries, and the impact that the next generation of designers could have on the future.”
